Peterson Standard System are iconic tobacco pipes that owe their fame to their innovative condensate collection system: the Dry System.
For over a century, these Irish tobacco pipes have combined a robust design with unique functionality that ensures a dry, condensate-free smoke.
In this article we will delve into the features of the Peterson Standard System, exploring why they continue to be a favorite choice of smokers around the world.
Peterson Standard System: features
Always imitated, but never equaled, Peterson Standard System pipes always offer a cool, dry smoke, thanks to a special condensate collection system, the Dry System.
At the heart of the Dry System is a small reservoir designed to collect moisture from the smoke before it reaches the smoker's mouth.
Another key feature is the P-Lip mouthpiece (a.k.a. palatal mouthpiece), which has a relatively small entrance hole that opens quickly and then closes again near the tip.
This mouthpiece is designed to direct smoke to the palate and avoid burning the tip of the tongue.
Added to this, the mouthpiece's graduated hole reduces the smoker's suction by 15 times when he or she reaches the burner, so the risk of feeling the bitterness of condensation is greatly reduced.
In fact, all the moisture from the smoke flows into the tank.
But how exactly does this system work?
In order for the Dry System to work properly, the mouthpiece has a small extension, the tip of which passes through the draft hole of the stove and into the condensation chamber.
This directs the smoke down and around the condensation chamber so that much of the moisture is dispersed.
So if you own a Peterson Standard System, never remove this metal extension, otherwise you will no longer get the typical condensate-free smoke.
Finally, we would like to highlight the tobacco pipe's good anchorage to the mouth guaranteed by the palatal mouthpiece, so it is perfect for those who tend to smoke with busy hands.
Peterson Standard System: opinions
Despite the advantages of the Dry System, pipe smokers are rather divided about the Standard System.
The main criticism is of the palatal mouthpiece, on the grounds that it would concentrate hot smoke at the palate, creating discomfort for the smoker
In addition to this, cleaning and maintenance are also considered.
Often, reference is made (incorrectly) to the “pipe cleaner test”, that is, whether a pipe cleaner can be inserted into the mouthpiece opening until it comes out the opposite end easily and without obstruction.
Clearly, this test may be less easy with small or more curved pipes.
For cleaning the palatal mouthpiece, we recommend using particularly fine tobacco pipe cleaners, while for the condensation chamber, it is sufficient to wipe it with rolled paper towels.
Should the condensation chamber contain far too much moisture, the advice is to pull out the mouthpiece and let the liquid drop out.
