The Sherlock Holmes series is arguably the most famous and successful among Peterson’s pipes. First introduced in 1987, this collection was created to honor the legendary detective crafted by Arthur Conan Doyle, one of the most iconic pipe smokers in literature.

According to the stories, Sherlock Holmes owned a selection of tobacco pipes, ranging from simple black clay pipes to elegant briar-made ones with striking grain patterns.

The detective used pipe smoking as a tool for inspiration, solving intricate mysteries, or finding solace after particularly challenging cases. Curiously, he stored his tobacco in a Persian slipper—a detail that highlights his eccentric character.

The Peterson Sherlock Holmes pipes, crafted in Ireland from high-quality Mediterranean briar, are named after characters, places, and objects from the famous detective’s stories.

In this article, we will review all 14 models that make up this exceptional collection.

Peterson Sherlock Holmes: The Original Collection

The first edition of the Sherlock Holmes series, known as “The Original Collection”, featured a set of seven tobacco pipes, one for each day of the week, complete with a dedicated wooden rack.

Crafted from carefully selected briar, these tobacco pipes were later made available in various finishings and, in some cases, even in meerschaum. All the tobacco pipes in this collection are characterized by their generous size and a Sterling silver band engraved with the Peterson logo and the detective’s silhouette.

To make these iconic shapes more accessible, Peterson also introduced a secondary line called Kinsale, offering similar designs but without the silver band and crafted from lower-grade briar.

Let’s take a closer look at the seven models from the original collection.
